On November 15, 2009 three members of South Presbyterian Church joined eight other
people from the Genesee Valley Presbytery on a mission trip to New Orleans to
help rebuild the city. Four years after Katrina, there are still great swaths
of the Lower Ninth Ward that are nothing but weeds and concrete slabs, and
large parts of other areas that look fine from a distance, but are in reality just
shells with empty interiors. We worked on one such house, laying tile, framing
doors and windows, installing kitchen cabinets and trimming dry wall in odd
corners. It was very rewarding to know that we had helped a family come
closer to reuniting and moving into their home. It was also a rich experience
in working together with members of other churches and organizations from
around the country. The Presbytery of Genesee Valley hopes to sponsor two
trips a year through 2011 to New Orleans for rebuilding--"Lest We Forget."
